Manchester United have made an attempt to opens talks for Tottenham utility Eric Dier.
The Daily Star says United were told £50m would not be enough to secure one of the top targets on manager Jose Mourinho's shopping list.
United have also been strongly linked with two other Tottenham players – full-backs Kyle Walker and Danny Rose, both 26.
But only Walker is set to leave the White Hart Lane outfit, with a bidding war under way which could take the fee above the £40m mark.
Dier, though, is a different matter as far as the Spurs hierarchy are concerned.
He is under contract for another four years and Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is committed to keeping him.
