Swedish star lawyer and author Leif Silbersky has taken over the appeal of convicted Ghanaian footballer, Kwame Bonsu.
Former Hearts of Lions player, Bonsu is seeking to overturn a two-year jail term for the rape and abuse of his wife Marie Magnusson and has acquired the services of Stockholm-based Silbersky.
Silbersky is notable for taking many high-profile cases which have enjoyed large media attention, making him one of the most popular lawyers in Sweden.
He represented Julian Assange, the editor in chief of Wikileaks when he was accused of rape and molestation in 2010.
The Court of Appeal for Southern Norrland on Tuesday announced that the case has been postponed partly because the prosecutor wants to call more witnesses for questioning and that Bonsu has demanded to replace his state-assigned lawyer.
The Court of Appeal had earlier rejected Bonsu's request to have him as a public defender, but Silbersky is willing to take over the case as a private defence attorney.
A formal decision will be taken on the matter on the date for the new hearing, which is yet to be announced.
Bonsu, 22, saw his contract with club Gefle IF terminated after the initial rape conviction was announced and he will also not be allowed to return to Sweden over the next ten years unless he is pardoned or his appeal is successful.
