'We Do Have the Same Haircut!' Stoke Defender Mocks Referee in Case of Mistaken Identity

Published on: 20 December 2016

Craig Pawson has not been on the receiving end of a lot of festive cheer recently.

The referee was much maligned for not handing an obvious red card to Manchester United's Marcos Rojo for a two-footed, studs showing challenge in the 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace last Wednesday, before being further criticised for sending off Leicester's Jamie Vardy in the Foxes' 2-2 draw with Stoke last Saturday.

The Leicester striker was wrongly adjudged to have committed a similar tackle to Rojo's, despite replays showing that the 29-year-old had been shoved by Glen Johnson ahead of the incident, and that he had won the ball cleanly before fouling his man.

If that barrage of abuse wasn't already enough for Pawson, more criticism was heaped on him by Stoke full-back Erik Pieters for cautioning him in a case of mistaken identity. The Netherlands defender was yellow carded by Pawson for an alleged foul when it was fellow defender Bruno Martins-Indi who had, in fact, committed the offence, and Pieters mocked the match official for getting it so blatantly wrong with a humorous response to being asked about the incident after the game.

He said: "I don't know what they are going to do with that, but it was not a yellow card for me. We're the same colour and have the same haircut, so I think it's difficult to tell us apart."

So that's three Christmas cards Pawson won't be getting this year!
