Whatever Happened to Royston Drenthe? The Dramatic Fall of the Talented Winger Tipped for Greatness

Published on: 25 November 2016

Royston Drenthe has joined the long list of Dutch talent that have fallen off the football radar in recent years, and appears to be on the brink of early retirement after a staggering few years sees him without a club.

The 29-year-old joinedAbu Dhabi-based side Baniyas Club in the summer of 2016, but it didn't quite work out for him, and he has since left aftermaking just 18 appearancesand looking for a new team to play for.

Pretty much the story of his whole career.

It started off extremely brightly for the Dutchman, after being one of the bright sparks in an extremely gifted Netherlands U21 side back in 2007, alongside the likes ofRyan Babel, Maceo Rigters and Daniel de Ridder, that beat England, earning him a staggering move to Spanish Giants Real Madrid for €14m.

That didn't last long however, managing just48 appearances and two goalsduring that time, but loan spells at Hercules and Everton halted his progress at the Bernabeu, and showed just how much the Madrid hierarchy fell out of love with him very quickly.

At Everton, then manager David Moyes saw some real potential in him, and during his 21 appearances, where he scored three goals, could have pushed on in English football, but he himself admitted to his attitude problems, where he once confronted Moyes in training.

Keeping with tradition, it didn't work at Goodison after that.

It's been a rocky road since then. He joinedRussian side FC Spartak Vladikavkaz after his contract expired at Madrid in 2012, before returning to England with Reading in 2013, and Sheffield Wednesday on loan in 2014. A try withTurkish side Kayseri Erciyesspor in the 2015 January transfer window also ended in failure.

Regardless of what he's done in the past, he's still a class act, and would be a super signing for any club willing to take on the controversial but talented winger.
