World Cup 2022: Portugal coach Fernando Santos lauds players for sticking to plan against Ghana

Published on: 26 November 2022

Portugal coach Fernando Santos has showered praises on his players for listening to instructions at half time following their 3-2 win over Ghana on Thursday.

After the goalless first half, Ronaldo opened the scoring for Portugal via the penalty spot but Ghana improved after the goal and scored the equalised through skipper Andre Ayew from close range.

Portugal responded with two goals in two minutes to seal the points - Joao Felix converting a delightfully clipped finish and substitute Rafael Leao coolly stroking in just seconds after coming on. Osman Bukari headed in a late consolation for Ghana and there could have been real drama in the ninth minute of stoppage time.

"We improved from the final ten minutes and created four situations of great danger with crosses. It was not easy. But it wasn't easy, the team filled the game better in the various components in the last ten minutes of the first half. The team was more aggressive and created situations that they had not created until then," Fernando Santos said after the game.

"In terms of organization and the attack-defense transition, we did very well. Ghana never managed to create problems for us either in quick exits or on the counterattack. Zero shots by Ghana in the first half. We had security with the ball, but we were passive. We were exchanging behind, but when we invaded the midfield, we circled back and outside. There was little aggression towards the opponent. That was missing.

The defeat means Black Stars are bottom of Group H after Uruguay and South Korea played out a goalless draw earlier on Thursday.

The Black Stars will now switch their attention to their attention to the match against South Korea on Monday before taking on Uruguay on December 2 at the Education City stadium.
