World Cup 2022: Portugal conceded goals that came out of nowhere - Fernando Santos

Published on: 26 November 2022

Portugal coach Fernando Santos has expressed his disappointment after conceding cheap goals against Ghana in their 3-2 win at the 2022 World Cup.

After the goalless first half, Ronaldo opened the scoring for Portugal via the penalty spot but Ghana improved after the goal and scored the equalised through skipper Andre Ayew from close range.

Portugal responded with two goals in two minutes to seal the points - Joao Felix converting a delightfully clipped finish and substitute Rafael Leao coolly stroking in just seconds after coming on. Osman Bukari headed in a late consolation for Ghana and there could have been real drama in the ninth minute of stoppage time.

"Patience was needed, but not the patience we had. The team was so blocked, the opponent so closed... That way we don't score goals. I told the players that at halftime," Santos said after the game.

"They noticed, tried to modify the type of plays. That's what happened, the penalty move is an example of that. We conceded goals that came out of nowhere. Just now I heard João say that. No one can concede goals that came out of nowhere."

The defeat means Black Stars are bottom of Group H after Uruguay and South Korea played out a goalless draw earlier on Thursday.

The Black Stars will now switch their attention to their attention to the match against South Korea on Monday before taking on Uruguay on December 2 at the Education City stadium.
