Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan mourns passing of Pele

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has paid tribute to the life and legacy of Brazil legend Pele, who died on Thursday in São Paulo following a battle with cancer. 

Pele, who is arguably the greatest player ever died at the age of 82.

He is credited with scoring a world record 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances during a 21-year career, including 77 goals in 92 matches for his country.

“Thank you for paving the way for us to follow. RIP legend,” Gyan wrote on Twitter.

Pele is the only player in history to win the World Cup three times, lifting the trophy in 1958, 1962 and 1970. He was named FIFA’s Player of the Century in 2000.

He had been suffering with kidney and prostate problems in recent years.

Gyan is the all-time leading goalscorer of the Black Stars, with 51 goals. He represented Ghana at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.

With six goals, he is the top African goalscorer in the history of the World Cup.
