Asante Kotoko youngster Evans Owusu has revealed why he wanted to quit football a few years ago after helping the Porcupine Warriors beat arch-rivals Hearts of Oak at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday in the GFA Normalisation Committee Special Competition.

I planned to quit football because of Poverty -

The Porcupine Warriors defeated the Phobians 5-4 on penalties in the semi-final of the Special competition after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time.

Owusu, who converted his spot-kick, opened up on how he almost lost hope in pursuing his dream of becoming a professional footballer during what he described as 'hard times.'

"I never dreamt of this sudden rise in my career," Owusu told Kotoko Express App

"It got to a time where I lost hope and nearly gave up on football as the hardships were too much to take. I lost my father and there was no help from anywhere".

"I am so grateful to God now for how far He has brought me. I was the only second division player to be included in our Africa squad and here I am playing in the 'El Classico' against Hearts."

"I can only be thankful to God," he added.

The defender joined the Ghana Premier League side from lower-tier side Charity Stars FC.
