Mendy set for short lay-off

Published on: 15 November 2018

Manchester City look set to be without Benjamin Mendy for several weeks after the France international had surgery on his left knee.

The 24-year-old defender missed most of the 2017/18 campaign after suffering a ruptured cruciate ligament in his right knee but the current injury is far less serious.

Mendy played the full 90 minutes on Sunday as City secured a 3-1 win against Manchester United before withdrawing from the France squad. Les Bleus play Holland on Friday and can be backed at 11/8 to beat the Dutch.

"Mendy attended Dr Cugat's clinic in Barcelona where scans revealed that surgery was required," said a statement from Manchester City.

"That surgery was conducted on Wednesday evening and everyone at Manchester City wishes Benjamin a speedy recovery."

Meanwhile Fabian Delph, who is set to captain England for most of Thursday's international friendly against the USA, has predicted a bright future for Jadon Sancho.

The teenager, who moved from City to Borussia Dortmund last year, has been excellent this season for the Bundesliga side and could be handed an England debut on Thursday at Wembley.

Delph said of Sancho: "I really believe the sky is the limit for him. I only managed to spend one week with him at City before he left and I was very impressed with him then.

"But seeing him this week, he's been very confident, very calm, very composed.

"You see certain things in certain players that stand out, he's done that for me this week. I've sat back and thought, 'Wow, we've got a special player here'."

Manchester City are 1/4 to win the Premier League title again this season while England are 5/1 to beat the USA 2-0. City are 2/9 to win their next match against West Ham United on 24th November.
