NorthEast United striker Asamoah Gyan haunted by 2010 World Cup penalty miss against Uruguay

Ghana and NorthEast United striker Asamoah Gyan says he will be haunted by the 2010 FIFA World Cup penalty miss in South Africa against Uruguay.

It's been nine years since Gyan missed the glorious oportunity to send Ghana to the semi-final of the World Cup and speaking to Hindustan Times, the 34-year-old disclosed that even if he hangs his boot, it will haunt him.

"Every day. It haunts me every day. I will never forget this. It has become part of my life. Till Ghana qualifies for the semi-finals because we had a chance and I blazed away (the shot grazed the horizontal and flew into the Johannesburg night sky)," he told the Hindustan Times.

"Even when I stop playing, it will haunt me. Even when I am seeing football on TV and there is a penalty in a normal league game, it just pops into my mind. It is like, ‘I don’t want to see a penalty in football because it connects my mind to 2010’. What is keeping me going is that I am strong mentally."

The Ghanaian has since led the Black Stars to the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015 and helped the team qualify for the FIFA World Cup in 2014.

The former Sunderland forward currently plays for Super League side NorthEast United in India.
