Philipp Lahm Wants Veteran Attacking Pair to Extend Bayern Munich Stay

Club captain Philipp Lahm is eager to see teammates Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben pen news contracts at Bayern Munich.

The Bayern full-back told German sports site Sport1 that he is hopeful over the veteran duo extending their stay at the Allianz Arena past their current June 2017 expiration dates.

Ribery and Robben have become part of the furniture at the Bundesliga champions after joining in 2007 and 2009 respectively, and have helped Bayern to dominate Germany's top tier over the past decade.

The pair have aided Bayern in scooping up an impressive 16 titles in that time, and currently boast an almighty haul of 30 winners' medals between them.

Now 33 and 32 years old respectively, Ribery and Robben have been plagued by injuries over the past three seasons, and their time spent on the sidelines could count against either winger being handed fresh terms by Bayern in the coming 12 months.

The emergence of younger, fitter widemen in Douglas Costa, Kingsley Coman and Patrick Weihrauch have also ensured that Bayern have not been left short when Ribery and Robben have been laid up on the treatment table.

Lahm, however, insists that the France and Netherlands internationals need to be retained by the club, with their wealth of experience and undoubted talent playing a major role in Bayern's continued supremacy in Germany.

He said: "I would definitely welcome it if both Robben and Ribery would stay put for another year.

"You simply still see each game that they have incredible quality. They have a lot of experience and have been playing at the highest level for a number of years. They know a thing or two about what it means to play football at a world-class level."

Bayern currently lie first in the Bundesliga with 16 points from their opening six league games.
