Sunderland Manager David Moyes has been charged with misconductby the Football Association after being sent off during his team's match against Southampton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, per theBBC.

The FA has supposedly claimed that'Moyes used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official'.

The incident took place after referee Chris Kavanagh refused to award the Black Cats a penalty when Victor Anichebe went down from an alleged foul in the penalty area.

After the match, Moyes apologised for his behaviour, but explained that the fourth official had chased him down.

Sent off for leaving my box [technical area], and for swearing at the fourth official, he said, via the Telegraph. The problem was, he chased me down the touchline. OK, I've stepped out. But then I swore at him, which I shouldn't have done.

Moyes was convinced that his side deserved a penalty for the challenge on Anichebe.

"When you see it again it's a stonewaller, no question," he insisted.

"Inside the box Yoshida fouls Victor, he comes across him, and it should have been a definite penalty awarded.

"We didn't deserve to lose, that's for sure. Our luck's out, but it will change. The performances are getting better and that will lead to goals and to results. Our last couple of performances have merited more."

Moyes hashas until 18:00 BST on Tuesday to respond to the FA's charge.
