West Brom End Pursuit of Out of Favour Liverpool Centre-Back Mamadou Sakho

West Brom have ended their pursuit of Liverpool centre-back Mamadou Sakho, according to a report inESPN.

Tony Pulis' side had been interested in signing the former PSG defender, who has been out of favour so far this season under manager Jurgen Klopp.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss clashed with Sakho during pre-season and the France international has only played reserve football so far this season.

West Brom are believed to be eager to bolster their defensive options, with the club looking particularly short in the centre-back region. Jonny Evans and Gareth McAuley have established themselves as the first-choice defensive pairing at the club, with Craig Dawson operating as a full-back and Jonas Olsson often featuring on the bench.

Baggies boss Pulis watched the centre-back during Liverpool's U23 match against Derby, but ESPN sources believe no deal will go ahead.

The 26-year-old has not featured for Liverpool since failing a drugs test back in April, and although he was cleared of any wrongdoing, it looks extremely unlikely Sakho will play again for the Reds.

Having been sent home for disciplinary reasons during Liverpool's pre-season, Sakho has been left to train with the club's U23's, and Klopp has hinted he is ready to let the defender leave during the January transfer window.

Liverpool have a lack of quality at centre-back, with Lucas being asked to fill the void left by Joel Matip during their 4-3 defeat at Bournemouth. While Matip has impressed in a leaky defence, Dejan Lovren remains unconvincing while Ragnar Klavan has not started a Premier League game since September.

Sakho joined Liverpool in a deal worth £18m in 2013 from French side PSG, and has made 79 appearances for the Anfield club in all competitions, scoring three goals.
