Asante Kotoko fails to defend Ghana Premier League title

Published on: 11 June 2023

Asante Kotoko, one of Ghana's football powerhouses, has fallen short in their quest to defend the league title they triumphantly claimed during the 2021/22 season.

The anticipation was high as fans eagerly awaited another dominant display from the reigning champions, but alas, their dreams were dashed as the team struggled to recapture their previous glory.

The disappointment lingers in the hearts of Kotoko supporters, while new champions Medeama SC and their fans celebrate a wonderful journey to victory.

Asante Kotoko now ponders what went wrong in their title defense campaign.

The dethroned winners struggled to find the back of the net in some games and also couldn’t stop conceding late goals. Apart from on-pitch problems the club also faced some off-pitch problems too.

Supporters of the club at some point in the season started accusing the Ghana Football Association of being behind the club’s struggles in the league.

The Porcupine Warriors then parted ways with their Burkinabe coach Seydou Zerbo due to poor results.

Assistant coach Abdul Gazale managed the team for the rest of the season. The Kumasi-based club drew goalless at home with Dreams FC in the final league game on Sunday afternoon. They ended the season in 4th place with 52 points and Steven Mukwala was their top scorer with 11 goals.
