Ghana coach Chris Hughton explains Richmond Lamptey’s 2023 AFCON no show

Ghana coach Chris Hughton has explained why Asante Kotoko midfielder Richmond Lamptey is yet to make an appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d'Ivoire.

Lamptey, who is one of the three local players selected for the tournament is yet to make an appearance in Ivory Coast.

He was an unused substitute in the opening game against Cape Verde and also missed out on the matchday squad for the Egypt clash.

Ahead of Mozambique clash, the former Premier League manager has explained why the Asante Kotoko deputy captain is yet to make an appearance at the tournament.

"As regards Richmond Lamptey, he is very much a part of the squad the fact that he is part of the squad, everyone has an opportunity. We constantly talk about how difficult it is to pick a team, to pick a bench and also leave a player out," he said.

"This is a responsibility for myself and the technical staff but Richmond (Lamptey) has been a big part of our squad, and as has everybody else. That means they all put themselves always into consideration to be involved," he added.

The Black Stars will face Mozambique on Monday night at the Stade Alassane Outarra for a place in the knockout stage of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana need a victory against the Mambas to progress to the next round of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d'Ivoire likewise Mozambique, who will also sail through with a win in Monday's match.

Cape Verde have already won the group after back-to-back wins over Ghana and Mozambique. Egypt are second with two points while Ghana and Mozambique have a point apiece.
