Jamie Carragher Says Liverpool Coming Up Short Against Southampton Was Just 'One of Those Days'

Liverpool failed to keep their good run going this weekend, coming up just short in a 0-0 draw against Southampton at St Mary's on Saturday.

Despite dominating possession and getting several chances, they were unable to make the breakthrough, with the hosts having planned to make life less than enjoyable for Jurgen Klopp's men.

The Reds have now left Chelsea with a chance to go top when they face Middlesbrough on Sunday.

Former Liverpool defender, Carragher, now a pundit onSky Sports, rues the missed opportunities, but admitted that it was just one of those days.

"For one of the first times this season there was a lack of quality in front of goal," he said to Sky.

"Firmino's was the standout chance, Matip could have done more - maybe been a bit braver from a fantastic [Philippe] Coutinho cross - and then Clyne at the back post.

"It felt that it all went the wrong side of the post for them today. Sometimes you have days like that.

"But a positive side for Liverpool is they didn't do anything stupid at the back, they haven't kept many clean sheets this season and they will be pleased they managed to do that."

Carragher, though, did acknowledge the visitors will see it as two points dropped considering the chances they created.

"Looking at how dominant they were, they will be disappointed," he said. "Southampton is always a tough game, they got a beating against Chelsea last time out at home¦but it's not an easy place to come to.

"But with the chances Liverpool had and the improved second-half performance, they will be disappointed."

Carragher was also full of praise for the Saints' centre-backs Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk, who put in masterful performances and made superb last-ditch challenges to keep Liverpool out.

"You can see how Southampton were set up from the start of the game," he added.

"It was pretty obvious the game was going to be about counter attacking for them and they believed in their defensive side, and why not, with two centre-backs like that and a midfield three in front of them.

"The two centre-backs can go up against anyone in the league. Fonte is a top level player and Van Dijk has impressed everyone since he came here even though there were some doubts coming from Celtic. He looks like he has everything."
