Liverpool Captain Praises Club & International Teammate for 'Big Contribution' Already This Season

Jordan Henderson has lavished praise on Liverpool team-mate Daniel Sturridge for the contribution he has made so far this season.

Sturridge appeared from the substitutes' bench to play a huge role in the winning goal during the last-gasp 1-0 Merseyside derby victory over Everton on December 19, with his shot favourably cannoning back off the post for Sadio Mane to tap home from close range.

The striker could be involved from the start in Tuesday's Premier League match against Stoke City, particularly with Roberto Firmino potentially being disciplined after being arrested on Christmas Eve for drink-driving, and Henderson said that he expects Sturridge to make significant contributions to the Liverpool cause between now and the end of the season.

The Reds captain wrote in his official matchday programme notes: I'm not going to lie: the feeling when Sadio swept the ball into the net was absolutely brilliant.

Of course it was Sadio's name that appeared on the scoresheet, but he'll be the first to point out the massive role Daniel Sturridge played in the win. Studge is a such an important player for us and he's already made a big contribution this season and will have an even bigger one to make between now and May."

Sturridge has often been left frustrated over a lack of regular game time for the Reds this term, with manager Jurgen Klopp preferring to start Firmino or Divock Origiin attack.

The 27-year-old's lack of starts have not hindered his call-ups to the senior England national side, however, with Sturridge starting three of the last five internationals.

Reds captain Henderson claims that there is no better English centre forward than Sturridge at present and, despite admitting that the ex-Bolton and Chelsea star can be overlooked at times, added that he was proud to play alongside Sturridge for club and country.

He said: I know people rave about Studge's finishing, but he's showed this season, when starting games and coming off the bench, that his quality helps the team even when he's not the one putting the ball into the back of the net.

Maybe that sometimes gets lost on the outside where there is a bigger focus on goals, but inside our dressing room we see everything Studge brings to the team and squad. I'm lucky I play with him for both club and country and I personally don't think there's a better English centre-forward.
