Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge Blasts 'Unfair' Criticism Labelling Him a Selfish Player

Published on: 13 November 2016

Daniel Sturridge has hit out at criticism of his style of play, having been labelled a 'selfish' player by some fans and journalists of late.

TheMailreport that Sturridge insisted that he is 'not worried' about criticism from outside his team - but the Liverpool forward's dismissal of the comments appeared to lean more toward 'hurt' than 'unbothered'.

When asked what he thought of the 'selfish' tag, the England international said: "It's not fair. It's not fair. I feel that I contribute to the team. I assist, I score goals. It doesn't matter what people say about me."

He continued: "I feel that if I'm coming short to get involved in the game, then there is nobody up front in the centre forward position and it is important for the team to have a focal point. If I drop deep and get on the ball, do skills and take people on, then there is nobody up front and that is where I need to be.

He'll always score goals will Sturridge. Sterling making England tick though. Love the way he's responded since the summer. Gritty bugger!

"I need to be between the lines, threatening the centre-halves, pushing them and creating space for other people. It is about being involved in the game as much as possible. You have to be aware. My job is to score, to create for the team. Maybe if I have dropped into midfield, I have gone too deep.

"You can drop there to create a different picture and cause them problems. It is about being in the box and that is where I need to be. I want to score goals but as long as the team wins, that's what matters."
