Africa has produced wonderful goalscorers at the World Cup over the years. And the 2022 World Cup will be another stage for other players to write their names in the history books.

The World Cup which will be held in Qatar will kick off on the 20th of November and end on the 18th of December.

Below are the top five African goalscorers at the World Cup.

Asamoah Gyan - 6

Asamoah Gyan, a striker, holds the record with six goals and three assists in 11 games throughout three tournaments from 2006 to 2014.

When he scored against the Czech Republic to propel Ghana to the second round 16 years ago in Germany.

He also performed well at the 2010 tournament in South Africa despite missing a crucial penalty. Ghana advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to his three goals against Serbia, Australia, and the United States.

Roger Milla - 5

Milla is the oldest World Cup scorer, having scored against Russia in 1994 at the age of 42, which was also the last of his five goals.

He had appeared in the 1982 finals and played all three games for the Indomitable Lions without scoring, but it was in 1990 that he rose to prominence.

Called out of retirement to play as a 38-year-old, scored two goals against Romania and another brace against Colombia as Cameroon advanced to the quarterfinals.

He returned in 1994 and scored his fifth World Cup goal in his final game with Cameroon.

Ahmed Musa - 4

Musa has scored 16 goals in 107 appearances for Nigeria, but four of those have come in the World Cup.

He featured in the Super Eagles' last two tournaments but will not return to add to his record after they failed to qualify for Qatar.

Musa scored twice against Argentina in a 3-2 loss at the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil, then added two more against Iceland in 2018. He has appeared in seven World Cups in all.

Samuel Eto'o - 3

The Fecafoot president was picked for four finals competitions, including as the youngest player in France 1998 when he was only 17 years old, totaling eight appearances.

He scored against Saudi Arabia in 2002, Denmark in 2009, and the Netherlands in 2010.

Papa Bouba Diop

Papa Bouba Diop soared to international stardom when he scored the opening goal of the 2002 World Cup in South Korea/Japan, assisting Senegal to a 1-0 victory against winners France.

He added two more against Uruguay as the West Africans advanced to the tournament's quarterfinals, with Diop finishing as their leading scorer with three goals.

He tragically died in 2020 at the age of 42, reportedly from motor neuron disease. Senegal President Macky Sall, as well as his 2002 colleagues, attended his funeral.
